InternetMouse Gestures

Mouse Gestures are a fast way to execute commands without using the keyboard, menus or toolbars. Instead, the user holds down a mouse button (usually the right one), moves the mouse in a certain way to form a gesture, then releases the mouse button.

In web browsers like Mozilla Firefox or the Mozilla Suite, gestures are used to go back or forward a page, switch between tabs, open multiple links at once, control text or image size, and numerous other functions.

However, gestures are in no way limited to browsers: the Mouse Gestures extension also supports Mozilla Thunderbird, Mail and News (Mozilla's built-in email client) and Chatzilla.

The only thing you may come across is certain gestures are similar to the technique used for hightlighting text on web pages and may result in something totally different happening.  For example it may go back a page instead of just hightlighting the text.

 will need training

Indeed I did switch off mouse gestures because of such problems. What I havn't seen yet is a small little game where you can train your mousing hand. When the mouse was pushed into the market it came with small card games to learn the coordination and a training course for selecting, double clicking etc.

If anyone sees  such a thingy for mouse gestures drop the URL please.

There are various ways to modify the add-on so it doesn't register certain gestures, will only register it after certain buttons are clicked (you can make it so you have to press one then the other for it to register), etc etc.  You don't have to turn it off if you can figure out how to modify it correctly.

I myself have only listed 6 gestures (because I simply won't remember the others) and removed all the others then I edited those 6 to easy to an easy to remember gesture instead of using the default settings.  There are other things to edit but I'm not to sure what they mean so I haven't messed with them.

 more gestures...

Ah, I'll try that, thanks.

Googling I found that mouse gestures may not be limited to Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Suite, Mozilla Thunderbird, Mail and News and Chatzilla.

An early game was:

Black & White
You can be the god you want to be.

"Gesture technology. There are no icon panels or on-screen controls in Black & White. If you want to carry out even the most intricate or powerful Miracles, you can do so by simply drawing the correct sign on the ground. It's quick, intuitive and adds to your power as a god."

Thanks for the link,
~"carry out miracles by drawing the sign". Sounds mighty powerful.

I think more about some small game, something like FreeCell to train point-and-click and double-click, or Solitair with drag-and-drop, or MineSweeper for precision point and click.

I see that Opera browser also has some gestures: http://www.opera.com/features/mouse/

Navigation-, Window-, Link- and  Wheel- gestures. And no training program.

 why gesture with a mouse?

why gesture with a mouse?

I'm not sure if the gesture with the mouse is a good way. If I communicate with gestures, and there are webcams around, what is the mouse for?

Indeed:
http://www.cs.ucsb.edu/%7Ematz/HGI/HandVu.html
the HandVu
vision-based hand gesture interface
detects the hand in a standard posture, then tracks it and recognizes key postures - all in real-time and without the need for camera or user calibration.

Requirements
Linux (with dc1394 firewire interface), or
Windows 2000/XP
a 1.5 GHz or faster CPU ...
a camera; either firewire, USB, or other frame grabber

distinction between gesture and other movement

Somehow you should be able to make a clear distinction between a gesture and some other movement - the mouse gesture you make by holding the button. Or would you want to use a specific configuration of the hand to signal "this is now an intentional gesture" ?

 a ring, maybe

N stated "Somehow you should be able to make a clear distinction between a gesture and some other movement ..."

I'm not sure about that. I do not make that distinction IRL, do I?

But if you think that's it:
how about a ring on a finger with bluetooth signal to the interface.
Or better just optical: if I show the sign on the ring I really mean it. Else it's just some other movement. Could be more then one sign, selecting different channels then, to who I signal.

 channels ?

ppp, your "ring on a finger with bluetooth signal to the interface" sounds like a very clever idea. I remember that I saw a wireless "mouse" somewhere with extra buttons. The idea was to use it for Powerpoint presentations. Yes, a magic ring then

By "selecting different channels" you mean that you want to sign to different programs ?

 different channels

"selecting different channels" does not mean different programs.

I think more signing end-to-end and not just giving commands to the browser.

Example:
I'm in a hurry now.
Sign to N "I have to think about it"
Sign to Crystal "thumbs up, great thread"
Sign to all "winking, ciao, I will come back"
Sign to the browser "logout and close"

This all with one gesture please.

ppp, u want it all ?
Written on 11/12/05 at 08:18:55 GMT by Norbert
You want it all, and you want it now ?
Yes, I thought so.

Let me see:
with "selecting different channels" you mean that you want to address different persons, "signing end-to-end". May I point out that you could do that with just short clips from a Web cam, no real need to bother some sign recognition computer thingy. Or did I get your point wrong.

Your example sure is a complex gesture. Can you sign that In Real Life ? But then maybe you could.
{[:all] [in a hurry], [:N] [scratching head], [:Crystal] [thumbs up, great thread], [:all] [wink, back soon], [:browser] [logout, then exit]}.

"This all with one gesture please." Ahem, pretty difficult to do IRL, don't you think ?

 selecting different channels

For selecting different channels one would need a different channel. An eye tracking camera maybe, or:

Maria Malek found this "Hands Free Mouse": Smart-NAV 3 Standard Hands Free Mouse -- Reaching for the mouse wastes time -- Natural Motion SmartNAV was designed to complement the natural head motion -- Use Your Head, Spare Your Hands .

Selecting different channels could be done with that, I guess: look at the avatar you mean, as you look at person IRL.
