Certain viruses can divert you to false search results, won't let you view anything other than certain search engine results, etc.  I've never heard of spoofed popular search engines but hey in this day and age anything is possible.

I myself was infectd with one a while back that whenever I typed any address into the url bar it brought me to this certain search engine.  It let me view other pages, etc etc but I couldn't hand type in any address.  I had to download the patch via a different computer just so I could get that function back again.  Quite a hassle lol.

I had something similar happen because some adware edited my hosts file for me, effectively changing the IP address of the site. Sure it was an erotic literature site, but as a writer I must be open-minded and educate myself in various forms of writing.

I've recommended to a few people who are using XP: Don't use the admin account unless you need to. Set up a primary account with non-admin priveleges. It should prove a lot more effective to clean your computer of virii, etc.

THere's probably a lot of people who recommend that. It occurred to me since when I started using Linux I read not to use the 'root' account all the time.
