Found out the reason our site was down today was due to a guy working that cut the wrong line, causing a blackout in Los Angeles, where our data center is located. The whole blackout only lasted about an hour, but it took most of the day to get all areas and all facilities restored. It is surprising how far reaching a power outage in an area like that can be. Probably more than a few effects were experienced world wide. You can find out more about it at cnn.com.
Ha, funny that they were installing a power status monitoring system when they knocked out all the power. Just goes to figure.
