NASA has some very interesting programmming solutions available as open source, such as artificial intelligence applications Livingstone2/Skunkworks and IND, World Wind virtual globe, BigView viewer for large images, ECHO earth science collaboration system, Pour information storage and retrieval system, and other fascinating scientific applications.
