Site NewsIf you are reading this, you can feel confident that you are at the new server. The old server is set so that no cgi will produce anything except a site-wide notice.

Hopefully we will be over our data loss problem. You know, I even found the .htaccess file overwritten? What was happening was that there would be an error message "too many files open on system". Then there would be a permissions problem where no one could access any page, even just the home page. Then the data would start disappearing. The data wouldn't actually be deleted, but rather overwritten with blank characters, keeping the file exactly the same size so that it was impossible to tell which ones were destroyed. I imagine we'll be running across some more of them to replace as time goes on.

This phenomenon was not isolated to any one area of the site. It was happening to the error and access logs as well, where I found parts of other sites written out into SiteLibrary's log files, complete HTML tags and javascripts included. Also the dates were skipping around in the log. It was an incredible mess.

I sure do hope nothing like that ever happens again. It was going on for a few weeks, getting more extreme and more frequent all the time. At the end I was sitting there for hours... backing up data and restoring it again to keep everything working. Just glad it's over with, that's all I can say. Knock on Wood.

 Setting DNS Before It Propagates
Written on 08/02/05 at 06:18:37 GMT by Jos
Probably this darned DNS is about done switching back and forth, but not quite... Gets a little frustrating when you're trying to finish setting things up. Meanwhile I found this interesting little tidbit:

How can I set the DNS configuration on a Windows machine? To change the DNS setting, from Control Panel click on "Network", choose TCP/IP from the menu and click on the "Properties" button. The "TCP/IP Properties" dialog box will be displayed.

Click the "DNS Configuration" tab, then click the "Enable DNS" radio button and enter the first nameserver IP address in the "DNS Server Search Order" textbox and click the "Add" button. The IP address will appear in the menu below. Follow the same procedure for the second nameserver. The "Host" and "Domain" fields are irrelevant but you need to fill them in to complete the process. You can use dummy values for these fields, for example:in the "Host" textbox enter meganameserversin the "Domain" textbox enter meganameservers.comAfter filling the required fields click the "OK" button to complete the operation.
