But often more than meets the eye.

See? I knew there was something to this article.

 Why?

Is that correct: with tinyurl or 2url one can make a short URL that has no sense that can be used for a URL that is a bit longer but can be remembered?

Ok, if one cannot type fast enough then there is a small advantage.
If one wants to hide the real URL, to play some prank.

Apart from that:
Where is the sense of it?
Is it just a joke for geeks?
Do I miss something?

 Not a Joke:
Written on 02/06/05 at 09:53:44 GMT by Norbert
To answer your questions in reverse order:
   - Yes, you miss the point.
   - No, I don't think it's just a joke, also it's more for Jane and Joe, those in the know don't really need it - they can always build an equivalent of it on the fly or circumvent obstacles should they arise.
   - The sense of it:
      -    URLs can be of any length, URLs of thousand characters are not uncommon. This is really a shortcoming of Web sites that do not integrate a service like http://tinyurl.com for longer URLs.
      -    Unfortunately most systems we use today can not handle long URLs correctly:
         -    either the formatting of the user screen breaks or is extrenely ugly,
         -    or the URL itself is lost,
         -    or the URL is not copied correctly when you copy and paste text.
Occurs frequently when using URLs within normal text, like in emails or postings to forums.

Using a redirection service like http://tinyurl.com/ gives a short URL that will survive under more conditions - some programs still get it wrong.
http://2url.org/ offers also the option to select a mnemonic Id, I have not tried that yet.

I know that there are more sites like this with varying additional options, please have a look and tell us.

--- URL corrected, thanks jotfish
