Nigritude Ultramarine - An SEO contest
Published on 07/04/04 at 22:39:12 GMT by Jos

SE OptimizationRather than sitting here perplexed over the "nigratude ultramarine" search term I keep running across in all the webmaster forums, I should be outside by now finding a way to house the roosters that are still in with hens due to hatch chicks any time now. But as usual, I ran across something that keeps me online a little longer than I planned. How nigritude ultramarine could take first place over the chickens and over everything else for that matter is understandable only by those who have been on the web too much for too long.

When looking around our Wiki, I noticed that somebody had added a spam link on our recent changes page. So I looked around a little more and was interested to find that someone had added "This post is testing the WIKI Sandbox Nigra Ultramarine and Serps competition techniques." to the sand box. I looked it up at Google and found that this was happening at several Wikis and that we were the second search result on the list for "Nigra Ultramarine and Serps competition techniques".

However, Nigra Ultramarine is not the search phrase I expected, rather shouldn't it be nigritude ultramarine? I hadn't taken the time to look into it before, so I proceeded to do a little research, thus keeping me online even longer than I had hoped. Darn it! It's the 4th of July for Pete's Sake! Can't I even leave this site for one minute?

Anyways, I found that there are at the moment 528,000 results for the term nigritude ultramarine, that SEOBook.com has a sponsored Google text ad for those words using his site and "Nigritude Ultramarine & SEO secrets" as the ad text, and that Anil Dash's site at dashes.com is the current number one result. Interesting.

Nigra Ultramarine brings up a sponsored ad by overstock.com for "Deep Discounts on Books, DVDs, CDs, & More At Your Online Outlet Store!" (I don't really see the connection, but oh well, overstock.com is a great place to shop). The top result for that term is a site that has Nigritude Ultramarine Articles, the particular top-search-position article being titled "The Surprise Garden", where characters Nigra and Nigro, who are siblings, plant a garden to surprise their mom and dad. Scattered throughout are bolded adjectives, subjects, and verbs such as ultramarine, Marine, Nigro and Nigra's names of course, nigrituding (a verb?), niger black rose; and some other words bolded too, for some reason: pizza, red, fancy, big... Amazing how a cute story that somewhat made sense could be made with those words. That has to take the cake, although like I said, I haven't had time to read a bunch of what others have come up with. You can read The Secret Garden at Seibertron.com, which is actually a pretty neat site about Transformers action figures. If you can't find the way in to the article from the site front page, it is linked from THIS PAGE. There is a good amount of research done on the contest also at the Official Contest Page of that particular site.

Well this is getting to be a very long story where I intended to make only a note. Google is so fascinating how it works and the effects it can have on peoples' activities, it hard to stop looking further.

My original note was meant to be about the picture I found at SearchGuild Forums. The link to the picture has a .pl extension, but it shows an image. Apparently the image originally showed the site time so that entrants could know when the contest started. Then it changed to show the search term at the moment the challenge began. (I noticed this because I was trying to copy nigritude ultramarine out of their forum to save keystrokes : )

The contest has two phases, with the first phase already ended June 7, winner being ANNOUNCED HERE in the SearchGuild Forums. The discussion spans 46 pages to date. The contest rules are HERE.

It suggests putting an image like this on your page you plan to use to win a top rank:

I'll have to look into it later because I really do have to get outside.

At the start of the article, "nigratude ultramarine" is a typo. It should read "nigritude ultramarine", with an "i".

Also, I forgot to mention where, on the page connected to "The Secret Garden" story, the terms nigritude and ultramarine were separately defined, and when combined, could be taken to mean "blue-black pigment".

The Secret Garden story has a zero page rank on the Google tool bar, but still shows up as search result number one for term Nigra Ultramarine. You just never know.

People sometimes do not agree on spelling. So I tried a few possible
options - as I would pronounce it.

Minimum Google results (1) so far:

  ni gri dude ultra marin
(and this is not a phrase)
