Source: Search Engine Roundtable Seems there arose a problem with the Google feature where a webmaster can request removal of their page from the Google index. Supposedly there is to be a verification in place where the robots.txt file would be checked to make sure that it was indeed the site owner who was making the request. Well, something went wrong, some pranksters got wind of it, and pages started disappearing from Google for no apparent reason. One victim tested the theory by using the exploit against Microsoft and Adobe, resulting in both sites disappearing from Google and having a Page Rank of zero. This was discussed and debated in Google News at Webmaster World until someone reported it to Google, who verified that it was indeed a bug and that it had been fixed. Search Engine Roundtable posted a follow-up HERE. |
