SiteLibrary.net Home Page Posted on 06/19/04 at 15:42:39 GMT |
Last night, Crystal mentioned the site description on the front page. I put that on there long before we linked the Web Directory from the front page, and I guess I got so used to looking at it that I didn't even notice how outdated it may be. It says "SiteLibrary - A collective effort to organize browser favorites into a 'site library' of searchable links." The gist I get from this description is that the site is about browser favorites, which does not really pertain to the Web Directory. Since the Directory should be the focus and is such an important part of the site, I suggest that the front page description be changed and the other line maybe worked into the Bookmarks Parking Directory description down below. In other words, looks like it's time to revamp the front page a little again!

Crystal, what do you think would good to put in the description "SiteLibrary Web Directory" on the front page? Shall we move Web Directory up to the top, then Link Collectors Community, then Bookmarks Parking Directory last? I think that would look better for us at our current state of development. Maybe we don't even need that one-liner between the horizontal rules at the top. Another good one will take a little thought. It's a good place for a relevant keyword phrase.

Heres what I was thinking: SiteLibrary Web Directory: High quality and user friendly directory. Submit your site or just a site that you think is great. *Please read submission guidelines here* Link Collectors Community: For researchers, directory editors and interested others to share their interest in various web features including searching, link indexing, web technologies, and online communities. Includes weblogs, forums, world holidays calendar, and banners. Catch a glimpse of the latest entries below. Bookmarks Parking Directory: A collective effort to organize browser favorites into a database of searchable links. Save your link collection online for free and easy access from anywhere. Features include a quick-add bookmarklet, personalized categories, ratings, reviews, search, and topic area for crosslinking similar bookmarks. *See Submission Guidelines Here" I don't think it's really nessesary (sp?) to have that one liner. And with the submission guidelines in the Bookmarks Parking Directory...you'll probably want to come up with a page of your own. You could use the web directories...but many of those don't apply over there but it's up to you.

That sounds really good Crystal. The only thing I don't like about it is that is sounds way better, seems more complete, and is a little shorter than what I wrote, all at the same time! [LOL] I compromised a little on a couple things and added some of my stuff back in the bookmarks parking paragraph. I think it looks way better now. What do you think? Jos

Oh and the almighty search engine of all is on all our pages right now. It's been a long time since they've done that. I'm excited because it might mean that we will get our page rating back soon. Or maybe even better? Just to get any green at all in the browser bar will make me happy. Just to know what it's going to be, whatever it is, will be a relief. We're lucky because I just put some efficiency improvements this morning on the portal pages, and then the updated front page went up only a couple minutes before I noticed the spidering. Hope they didn't miss it!

Hey just found this one as a description for the site...Promotes the web as an interconnected system of knowledge and resources. So how about replacing promotes with Promoting and use that as the line at the top?

That would be a good one liner. We need a place to put "bookmarks directory" linked in like it is in that line right now. If you hover over it, you will see that it is linked in. I haven't been able to see a good place for it yet, and I didn't like it with the name "bookmarks parking directory" changed. The other two areas are linked enough, but we need to keep our top search results for "bookmarks directory". Any ideas?

We could put "to organize browser favorites into a bookmarks directory of searchable links", although I did like it with "into a database". That would work fine. Then we could use that catchy one-liner at the top.

either one is good...whichever makes us keep the top results for it.

Re: SiteLibrary.net Home Page Posted on 06/27/04 at 04:58:41 GMT |
I've been agonizing over the front page again as hard as it may be to believe that a person could put so much thought into such a small amount of content, but you know me, making mountains out of molehills more often than not. I ran the page through the keyword density analyzer again and found that we had accumulated several more "poison words", so I removed "free", "great", and "resources", replacing them with nonpoisonous words where I could. That still leaves us with "bookmarks", "directory", and "links" as poison words, but there's not much getting around those three words on this website. Along the way, I ran across a neat thesaurus at http://www.wordiq.com/ and have been looking at lots of words. It led me to some interesting trains of thought to read up on later. I was trying to find something really good to put for that one-liner at the top since the page didn't look good at all with nothing there. What is there now is the result of the best I could do for now. It's kind of good I think, but I'm still not quite really settled with it yet. The front page, along with the rest of the site, still needs a lot of work in finishing, corrections, and improvements. I kind of wish I hadn't used all that fancy colored table border designs for everything since those aren't that great for fast page loads or search engine efficiency. It's hard to give them up when there is so much invested in them and when they are already site-wide and all. One of these days it is bound to seem more like progress rather than just changes and more changes, I hope.

Re: SiteLibrary.net Home Page Posted on 06/27/04 at 17:06:23 GMT |
Was first: A collective effort to organize browser favorites into a 'site library' of searchable links.
Then: Promoting the web as an interconnected system of knowledge and resources.
Then last night: A collective effort to promote the web as an informative and social system.
And now: A collective effort to promote the web as an interconnected system of information and ideas.
I would like to have the word "social" in where "ideas" is somehow, but can't find a word other than "connections" to go with it, which is repetetive of "interconnected", a word I do like in there, although it too is somewhat redundant since a system is by definition always interconnected. "Interconnected system" still sounds good. I still don't know *%?^!... It looks okay I guess. That one line of words is, or could be, important. They are in H1 tags and are the first real words on the page except for "Haven for Web Wanderers".

IS: A collective effort to promote the web as an interconnected system of information and ideas. How About: A collective effort to promote the web socially as an interconnected system of information and ideas. Or: A collective effort to socially promote the web as an interconnected system of information and ideas. Social is basically a verb, idea is a noun. You can't replace one for another without it looking and sounding weird.
