How to know if we have a new IM Posted on 12/14/03 at 10:09:23 GMT
I keep getting tempted to make the left panel IM note auto-refresh every few minutes, by putting in an iframe? But then it might slow down or mess up loading the pages for general use. Maybe it would be better to make a little popup that we can use if we want.
It gets tiresome refreshing the whole site just to see if there is a new IM, don't you think?
Some kind of refreshing popup notice would be very nice.

Jos,
Small iframes in a page are used by http://www.tag-board.com/ Tag-Board Message Board aka TagBoard "the least technologically advanced message board" Free service to provide real-time discussion without the complexity of forums. for chat-like communication and there they work quite fine. You can try one on the homepage http://www.tag-board.com/ to chat with whoever is around - no signup, just type your name and your message.
Left panel IM with an iframe: maybe just a message "New IM from {username}" and change the background color ?
----
Popup: I find that popup windows (if implemented as a new browser window that automatically gets the input focus) very problematic: they always get the wrong input.

I think a very small window is fine with: --- title: 2 newIM - SiteLibrary newIM: 2 msgs link last: (username) link (short-title) link 2 Guests 27 Members logged in as: ('username') --- Window refreshes every three minutes, the links open in a new window, if there are new IMs colors and title change: you can have a small window open and also see it in the taskbar (if title starts with number of new msgs).

Okay I've made some progress making the NewIM thing. You can find a link in the My SiteLibrary box left panel in the Geometry theme.
So whenever anyone comes back around here at least we can have a small window to refresh for new IMs rather than refreshing the whole portal page just to check if anyone answered back an IM.
I will do more on it later.

OK now it should be okay for a little while. I don't how to make the window or title bar change colors, so if it's important for it to do that, then someone will have to tell me how.
Otherwise it works okay for now. Later on I will thin it down a little and make it also into a refreshing iframe-compatible thing.

I updated the IM Refresh for WebAPP in the downloads. It should be easier to read now, and it has a couple of very small changes.
