German and French interpreters needed Posted on 06/28/04 at 03:40:17 GMT |
There are still parts of the German and French language files for this portal that need translating from English. Most of them are new phrases that have been added since the most recent translations were done. It would help a lot if one of our bilingual or multilingual members could look at these files, pick out the phrases that are still in English and translate them to French or German. The German file is HERE. The French file is HERE. Thanks for any help you can provide.

There's been some email discussion on this, on the side, and Norbert has already redone the German language file. He translated all the new phrases we have added since Abwyn's original German translation, such as those for the IMX system, other mods, and add-ons that I've added in. We still need to finish the French translation for this site. Also there are quite a few phrases that have wandered out of the language file during the course of things. I plan to get them back how they were intended so that the translations show up on as many phrases as possible.

Norbert found a small error in line for msg 477, where it had closing tag as \b rather than /b. This has been corrected with new files uploaded. Please get new files if you happen to be working on this language project. The updated German.lng file with mods/plugins phrases translated has also been uploaded for your perusal. It would be a good idea to separate out the sections that are for mods and make them accessible for others who may be using the same mods. Some parts of the language files need to be put in better order and labeled as to purpose.

After giving the language file a look, just an idea(?)/simple question...with a few mins. work, couldn't an online translator (like the ones below) be used to work on the lang. files? If so, Russian, Greek, Spanish, Portugese and many more languages would be wide open! Is there some reason this can't be done? It might not be an EXACT science, but it would be a start...right? http://www.freetranslation.com/ http://translation2.paralink.com/ http://www.worldlingo.com/products_services/worldlingo_translator.html Just a thought...

That would be a good alternative to get started with some more language files. Many of them already exist in old versions, so it wouldn't look too bad to have the few new phrases there are show up in syntax that was slightly off like the online translator results usually are. Probably for short phrases like most of them are, it could have pretty accurate results. Thanks Outlaw.

Just remember that some terms can't be translated because they just don't have that word in french or German etc. They'll give you the closest one. But usually a French or German user will have no clue what it even means in the context we use it in. It's definately a starting point though for sure.

This is true, and also, sometimes the way something is "phrased" in one language might not apply to others, or one word might have many uses/meanings.Pot for example (cookware or drug), Translate the phrase I am a stout boy into most languages, and the stout part gets turned into the word "beer"..ect. Here is a great link explaining/going into this very subject, with real links using the "BabelFish" translator... http://www.tashian.com/multibabel/, but I still think it might be a good start...

and just for good measure, I just ried this on several other sites, 3 different engines, and am installing a script to auto translate pages now, so far results are similar for all, so any use of said tranlators will definately require some human proofreading!
