Calendar Repeat Events Posted on 08/01/05 at 23:10:16 GMT |
Finally I completed the first step in a process I've been wanting to do for a long time. I made the calendar event dates show up if there is an entry for the particular holiday in any year. This way we will not need to repeat adding the same holiday year after year, while we can always add to them when they come up again if we feel ambitious to do so. Next step it really needs an extra field added setting whether it is, in fact, a repeating holiday or not, since some holidays do not fall on the same date every year as we all know. Until then, we will need to check the holidays as they appear on the calendar if we want to make sure they are in fact on the date shown. If not, we can just disapprove them or delete them, copying the information to the correct calendar date where possible. When we enter new events from now on, it would be very helpful if we could add a small note to the description if the holiday is not on the same day every year, and if not, then how the holiday date is determined if that information is available. Later on I'll figure out how to add that field to verify repeating holidays. Then we will be able to just check a box on the Add Holiday form.

I found out that the date can simply be changed through the Calendar Admin Panel. So that makes it a lot easier. Technical note: Rather than adding an extra field for repeating dates or not, the date field can be modified so that if a year is entered, it would not be a repeating date. If that field is left blank, the event would appear every year. There should be an admin panel for dates that do change each year, listed separately so they could be updated to the new date.

Is it even that important to have a calendar period? So now they repeat meaning one has to recheck every single entry. I know that isn't at the top of anybodys list. If it is then they need to get their priorities in line

No it's not really that important, but to me it cheers up the site a lot more to see something kind of fun like that. It's interesting to read about the different holidays sometimes. At least this way it will never be empty anymore when a new month comes up. Since it seemed so dumb to have a world holidays calendar with no events, I always felt like I *had* to put something on it as soon as a new month would come along. Plus at the old server the site was loading so slow... I just turned it off finally. I'm glad to have it back up there. Don't worry, I'll fix it so the non-repeating events won't show up until the date is corrected for the current year.

Don't anybody edit them yet though because I have some intermediate stuff in progress that might mess up the database. I don't have the site's current configuration set up on my local machines yet so I'm programming it live online. Just having a little fun here for a change after moving the site. Man, that was a chore, you wouldn't believe. Took about 4 days solid including all the database restorations I had to do at the other place and trying to track down what the heck was going on over there.

Okay I think it's fixed up a little now, and it has some new options on the admin form for better modifying of more fields. Now the repeat dates can be merged and dates entered in the year boxes for non-repeating holidays. I think it turned out kind of neat. There's always a lot to be done with that calendar, programming-wise.

Okay I think about all of the dates that show up on the calendar will only show in the year for which they are listed on the correct date. The others are archived - the ones that need their dates changed for the future holiday. The admin panel needs a field for where to add the option to edit that field so that everything can be edited from that one page. There might be more fields that still need added too, but it seems to be working pretty well. Let me know if you find any more holidays appearing on the wrong day. I think I got them all, but I could have made a mistake. Almost anything about any holiday can be changed or added to through the admin panel. Most of it can be done right through the holiday page as well. The admin panel shows all the holidays for a month on one page.
