SiteLibrary Site Awards Posted on 06/18/04 at 15:31:59 GMT |
What do you guys think of offering awards for sites we determine to be some of the best? We would need an award graphic, a forum for deciding on who gets the award, and a notification system.

Great Idea, as there are not many around anymore

Jos, that's a good idea, but I'm not too sure since the idea of awards has already been around for a while. That may not even be a factor really; there's nothing really wrong with them as long as they're not merely glorified links. If a site is "worthy" of an award, then that's cool. As far as an idea I was contemplating recently: what about a networking system similar to what's used on the osdn? By sourceforge, freshmeat, newsforge, etc. The "banner," for lack of a better term at the top of each site within the network is what I'm speaking of.

I agree... I think we should do it. There's an awards mod for this portal system, an old one, that I never have gotten a chance to try. I think it would be fun. I always like awards sites. It would be nice to make a classy one without a bunch of spammy links and stuff like some of them have.

Yeah for sure. It would only be the very most select of sites according to whatever criteria we were going by or that each on whatever judges panel was going by. Judging it would be the hard part to set up.

That sounds like a neat idea. Do you mean like a rotating banner system with the banners belonging to the members of the network? We sort of do have that here except a lot of members don't post their banners. Plus some of the banners we have here don't even point to members' sites but rather to sites we support or like. Not sure exactly how it would be set up as per what you might have in mind, but it does sound neat.

I think what he means is something like a link exchange banner program. In which all sites that belong to the "network" display the rotating network banners on top of their site.

That would be neat. I imagine we could make up some kind of script like that so people who didn't have a banner rotation script could participate without worrying about the programming. Or would they rotate?

I do like the idea of it...if it's kept pure (clean of hidden text etc) and not being plastered on every single page of a member site (to me that's just visual spam). Just a reminder that, because of the website interface used (MSN Groups, etc), not all people that have websites are able to add their own script...even cut-n-paste code.

Run it a the top or down the left side or right side, pulling the data using SSI, javascript, etc. The ideal thing would be for the data to be pulled from the "Headquarters" so each site within the network would not have to update it every time there is a change or addition. The obvious drawback is pulling info externally can slow down the loading of a site, depending on Internet peak times, server load at the time, host problems, etc. Hence me suggesting each site in the network updating the file manually. Perhaps a mailing list so every time the code was changed due to link additions or deletions, it would get emailed to the member sites. They'd have 7 days? to update the new code or be removed. An automated link checker that runs every 12 hours perhaps could notify when sites were not using the code. If the link checker fails on one site 4 times, it's likely that the networked site isn't just having temporary server glitches.

I mentioned the left or right side, which is a bad idea. I'd go with top or bottom.

Awe come on, use a HUGE banner with flashing graphics bright enough to cause epileptic seizures and freeze your browser j/k Seriously, go beyond what has been done in the past with a unique twist. Perhaps with different levels maybe along the lines of: http://www.webaward.org/winners.asp I would think that having the winning site displayed perhaps at the Top / front of the directory or here http://www.sitelibrary.net/community/ would be attractive to submitters.

how about a button display instead of a banner display, with top site having a banner....? i would be happy do some basic rotating animated gifs (i think ), if member sites felt they need an extra button display to include more info..
