Positive Thread  Editor Subcats
Posted on 08/29/05 at 07:27:18 GMT

I'm working right now on the ability to navigate the new submissions list via subcategory assignments. I've got it semi-working, but it's not going to work all the time at the stage it is at right now.

So if anything funny happens in trying to navigate your category or categories, this will be why.

By George, I think it's working.

I do believe we have editor subcats now!

For those who can, check out bantychick's cat and/or if you want your extra lower cat level editor name to be set to a subcat, say the word, and we'll test it out.

Also please notice Crystal and Norbert that we have editor subcats now for our names. We can keep any kind of bookmarks we want in there, or sites with notes..., whatever, but we should remember to keep those that are not appropriate for public display set as unapproved. The good ones we can set as approved and thus have our own little bookmarks categories just like ODP.

I suppose any editor can have one of these editor name categories as I am not aware of any special security setting for them or anything. Just a level of responsibility to keep those sites that should not be public listings set so they will not show up, is all that would be required to keep one of these exclusive bookmarks categories.

But I suppose that would mean finishing up the access to the approved listings in the directory categories because otherwise it would not be possible to disapprove any sites like if they were accidentally approved or something.

Oops I just found one problem in that when going in through a full directory access level login, then selecting a category that is not on my category list, the list is filtered so that nothing appears there. I'll fix that.

*update* Okay I think it's fixed now. Try it out so we can make sure there are no bugs.

Okay now I made it so that, for new submissions, if there is an assigned subcategory within the main category of an editor, those submissions within that assigned subcategory will not show up in the whole list of the editor. This will allow us to skip over submissions that someone else has access to editing without having to physically skip over them in our lists. So far this will affect only Magnolia because she has Business and bantychick has Business To Business set up as a test subcategory for this thing.

Please let me know if there are any access problems with any categories or any other strangenesses that seem to have appeared with the creation of these newest subcategory assignment features.

Does this mean that the higher up editor can no longer access an assigned sub-cat?  (Admin excluded; I just mean an average editor)

Yes we would need to think of another way around being able to access assigned subcats for a regular editor. For now at least they are not appearing in the main list.

This may perhaps be a part of the directory manager full access project.

Or another thought - maybe we could have a link at the top for accessing the particular assigned subcats if necessary. We'll have to think about it. That last idea would be another bit of figuring out how-to, but I'm sure it's doable without too much trouble.

Does one regular editor actually need to access a subcat managed by another regular editor? I was about to try to do something to allow access to a subcat to be specified, but then I got to wondering when and why we would even want that to happen. Wouldn't we want to set an editor at a fuller-featured level if they were to be responsible for reviewing submissions that another editor was responsible for?

Yes we would, hence why they would need to see what is going on in lower level cats.

Ok can you please remove esemji as editor of Travel?  Because I want those submissions to be viewable by me.  I know if I have to keep clicking the "Travel" header I am going to forget about them.

That is the main problem with not having submissions automatically viewable by a top-level editor, most editors will not be active meaning the submissions list will lag severely behind the other sections.

If you are not getting Travel in your list, that is something that is not finished. I was wondering about a scenario like that but hadn't gotten a chance to explore it yet. Thanks for pointing it out.

Possibly Esemji would rather be set to "India" anyways, now that we are finally able to do that.

But you should be getting Travel in your list since it's not a subcategory. I'll check it out.

Also I was wondering what would happen if two editors have the same subcategory. I'll need to set up some more test editors and test subcats to finish working out all the finer points of setting the subcats.

As for same level editors being able to do submissions of other same level editors in subcats - I think it's safer to not have that. That way we can set certain subcats to be edited by someone familiar with them, yet have categories above that more open.

Just give me some time and I'll get the details of this worked out.

Your noticing of things that could become a problem, or that already are a problem as per your mention of Travel, is invaluable to getting it all set up just right. So thanks.

Okay I set bantychick to Science, and now I see that the Science sites are not appearing in my list. So I'll fix that.

For the other thing - I think it should be set by levels - being that if an editor needs to access new submissions of a subcategory, then he or she should have a level set where he or she may do so.

Don't forget we still have the whole Directory Manager ordeal to go through so that people can edit their categories after the sites are already approved. That's important.

Yes it is very important.

Perhaps we should message Esemji asking if he'd like to edit in either "Travel/Destinations/Asia/India" or "Regional/Countries/I/India"?  Maybe this would spur on some editor activity?

Yes good idea. For now I will just turn off that Travel category so that it won't be bothering us until I get this other thing fixed.

Okay I have it now so that I can access Science new submissions although bantychick also has Science. That is how it should be. I'll keep fiddling with the subcat access thing. Personally I don't want them appearing in my whole list if there is an editor in a subcat of my higher cat. If you or anybody does want them appearing in their whole list, I think I can just add the subcat to yours or whoever's list, and then the subcat would appear in the list along with everything else. I'll try out this theory and let you know for sure, so we'll be ready when the editors start flocking in and grabbing up all our subcats.

Very nice Jos.  Personally as long as the editor is active I don't mind not seeing the submissions.  But in the case of someone that edits 2 sites every 6 months I need access to them...know what I mean?

Thanks for fixing it so the if someone has the same cat as you that both can view the submissions.
