RelCat Name Problem Posted on 08/11/05 at 09:05:11 GMT |
The RelCat problem needs to be fixed ASAP. As duplicating parts of category names (just to make the RelCat name not duplicate) is creating a bunch of really duplicated areas throughout the directory. I agree it looks dumb to have a Cooking RelCat in the Cooking category etc but creating for example, Education > Educational Programs > Programs for K-12 is just as bad, in my opinion. It looks silly to have 5 "Education"s in direct lineage.

Yeah I plan on programming that pretty soon because I'd like to have it show the full path myself too.

For that cat yeah but none of the other ones. I have one in Online > Health > Medical Supplies > Online Pharmacies....for Medicines in Health. And it was showing up before (just the one name) and now it's not showing up at all.

That's 'cause I changed things around in there a little bit, without checking for @links. Sorry about that. I changed your relcat number and it looks okay now I think.

OK I brought the to-do list up to date and it gave me those again. http://www.sitelibrary.net/Directory/Online_Shopping/Health_and_Beauty/Medical_Supplies/Online_Pharmacies/ The RelCat was working before I did that not it's not again.

It might be working again now. The main problem I could see was that generate HTML public pages was not putting the new full path to the relcat. Was that the problem you noticed too? I haven't tested it yet.

Just click the link I provided and you'll see that it doesn't show the full path. Just the last cat name.

I think after we regenerate the HTML pages it will get the path back now. We'll see anyways.

I had to regenerate pages because I was testing something new I made, so the related cat shows okay now on that one link in Shopping. Probably it's okay now. Also we don't have to worry as much about doing a cleanup - we can go ahead and do cleanup more often because I made a special page for when the Directory gets a 404. Try www.sitelibrary.net/Directory/nopagehere.htm and you will see what I mean. We can do more with that too... Like if we felt like keeping track of when we moved or renamed categories, we could have a custom forwarding page for each one and hardly have a 404. That might be a bit much though. I can get all the 404s out of the log easily now if time allows for making such forwardings. And there are certainly tons of 404s in the logs right now because I did cleanup when I moved the site to try to clean up some of the move mess. Didn't work though as it only deletes real folders and files, not broken file names. But this is totally off topics. The point here is only that the relcats are working now as far as I can tell.
