General Thread  Non-English descriptions
 Posted on 08/03/05 at 16:25:33 GMT

Someone needs to be properly editing them or else I will just be deleting the descriptions.  I will not approve a site where I can't understand if the non-English description is up to our standards or not.  The non-English submissions should be up to the standards of all our English submissions or else it's going to look like s**t to all non-English users.

That's okay, there's not that much we can do about them unless someone can edit them. I like having them because it helps non-English visitors and world search engines to find the sites. Please don't delete them after people go to the trouble of putting them in. Sometimes they're helpful in translating to a good English description too.

I originally made them so that people would stop putting foreign descriptions in the description field. It seems to be working.

But if the non-English descriptions are nothing but keywords what's the purpose?

I'm not sure yet. I don't think they'll hurt anything though. I can't tell whether they are all keywords or not, and if I could, I wouldn't know how to rewrite them properly. I'd hide them for you but I went to a lot of work to make that feature.

Most look alright.  And like you said we can't really rewrite them without actually being fluent or else they will look weird.

I'll just approve if it has proper punctuation.  It it doesn't I'll add the period, capitalize etc, then approve.

I think that sound okay for now. The best we can do anyways. Maybe somebody will come along who can write fluently in some other languages. Norbert is good with several of them. But how is he to know where the sites are with Non-English descriptions?

Maybe we could make some kind of feature for that too. I don't think it would be that hard to tell the MySQL to send records for all sites that have something in that field. All we would need would be an edit page for them.

What about another hidden category?  And we can manually move those with a legit non-English description (and not a second English one) into it?

That might be an idea. But what about the ones that no one knows the language for?

Then we may as well process as normal and basically ignore whatever is in that field and pray to God it isn't all crap.

That's what I've been doing. I didn't try praying to God yet. Do you think that would help? LOL. If we feel like being careful, we can always run it through a translator. It would probably at least tell us if there were any questionable wordings in there.

Nah most the online translators don't properly translate anyways.  I'll just ignore it, add a period etc.  Then approve.

A Question  Re: Non-English descriptions
 Posted on 08/06/05 at 18:10:15 GMT

I think I can get help with non English descriptions for all languages with Latin scripts (this unfortuately excludes many important languages like Russian, Hebrew, Greek, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, ...).

But it's a start.

I think that we could try it as a different step:

- submission sends it into a different field than now;
- normally during edit, just dont care about this field;
- with the next generation of the static html the site is approved with it's  English description only
- I make the one magic (SQL) line that shows  all sites where submitted-non-English is not empty AND published-non-English is empty;
- with this information I can go and get help (if I can't do it):  this step is now a lot easier: no worry about categories, site within guidelines, etc. really only see that it is sort of a translation of the English text;
- once I have the text I can copy it into the field we have now;
- and in the next cycle it gets published.

?

I can't change that field to a different one without going through some risky process that I used to make the field searchable in the first place. I didn't write down exactly how I finally got it to work, either. Took me a while to figure it out.

But probably we could concoct something that would keep it hidden until it was checked.

I'm really not that worried about it.

A Question  Re: Non-English descriptions
 Posted on 08/07/05 at 06:22:56 GMT

Ok, I see.
Let me try again:
- the edited non-e descriptions get a language identifier in front,  example: "lang=de "
- the submission editor does:
--   if there is an English text in the non-e field - delete it
or use for description
--   if the standard description is in a laguage other than English copy that description into this field (instead of just overwriting it, do NOT add the language identifier)
-- NOTE: do not delete any non-e text if the site offers also or is in English: the description an any other language may still help somebody.
-- optional: send an email to group at sitelibrary dot net with the text just before approval.
- I make the SQL magic to find all listings where non-e-desc is not empty AND does not begin with "lang=?? "
- peu a peu we can edit them

This could work for languages based on a Latin script. No change to the directory script for now, I can test it with a few sites and we'll see.

?

I think if we think about it a little more we can use your magic query line built in to the script and have some sort of a flag in the editors' interface. An extra field for the edited or not flag can be added. It's just making a field searchable or not that is the challenge. I made the foreign description field searchable.
