Lodging Posted on 06/02/05 at 08:06:32 GMT |
http://www.sitelibrary.net/Directory/Travel/Lodging/ I have had to take the drastic step of automatically deleting any site that has been misplaced into this category. I swear to God there are 50 sites waiting in that category, NONE of which even belong there. There were VERY clear guidelines in that category that stated "with locations worldwide. individual hotels etc please place in destinations" they have not read that so I have put "Accommodation-related websites for locations in more than one region ONLY. Do not submit individual lodgings (or lodging-related websites for one region only) to this category or they will be declined." I realize this is drastic but if they don't have the common courtesy to even read that then I don't have the time of day to bother with the site. I will process the ones incorrectly placed that are waiting right now but anymore that come in that are incorrectly placed will be deleted. When people email us back asking "why was I declined?" just point to the VERY CLEARLY stated guideline.

Hmm... The public category description right now reads like this:
Lodging Accommodation-related websites for locations in more than one region ONLY. Do not submit individual lodgings (or lodging-related websites for one region only) to this category or they will be declined.
It's difficult since we can't put submission guidelines for each category on the submit page, but we could put that in the submissions guidelines page if it's becoming that much of a problem. For the regular category submission page, which everybody sees, not only the submittors who will not read things, how about something like this: Lodging Accommodation-related websites for locations in more than one region. Individual lodgings or lodging-related websites for one region only are located in subcategories more specific to their location. Would that be better?

Either way I will still decline them. If they can't be bothered to read the very clear guideline then I am not going to be bothered fixing their submissions plain and simple. 5 out of hundreds of submissions have been correctly placed the rest have had to be moved. We reserve the right to decline for any reason we see fit. Well I see fit to decline because of their blatant disregard for plainly written guidelines. We could decline because they don't have the correct title, etc etc. This is a reason to decline and yes I will decline it. If such a time comes that an editor will take over Travel (or at least edit in it) then they can do whatever they want. But noone is editting in that category so I am still the Senior Editor for that category.

Not sure where esemji is but he'll probaby be back soon. Regardless, declining them is just what I'd do too, depending of course. I might glance at the site. If it was an exceptional site that I thought would be an asset to the directory, I might move it to where it belongs. But at other time I might just decline all of them if I was fed up with too many ignoring the guidelines. We've made it plain enough to know what is asked of people in trade for them having a free listing in our directory.

They also are not sub-categories. The only thing that will ever be in "Lodging" is internation websites. Never individual hotels etcetc. They belong in Destinations. I will rewrite the description and reformat everything, yet again (this is like the 5th time in 3 days), to fit your description minus the sub-cat part because there aren't sub-cats.

Okay thanks, but no hurry. I just don't think we should have submission guidelines on the category description page is all. The description itself is a guideline that people should be able to read. Probably we should add that to the submissions guidelines page, though, for areas that do become a problem such as travel as you are experiencing now.

You can just add: Any submission that is incorrectly placed may be subject to automatic deletion. So please be sure to read the category description (if there is one).
