Myriad Search
Searching: 09/17/08 - 06:58:53 by Jos
Myriad Search . This is Aaron Wall's search engine. It's pretty neat, nice and simple, works good. Nice easy to read sets of results. You can select which major search engines of Google, Yahoo!, MSN, or Ask Jeeves to include in the results and even give them a bias setting. This is a different sort of a search engine, a refreshing change from all the complexity that sites these days seem to be having.

Sorry about the sluggishness and other strange behaviors you may have encountered when visiting this site in recent weeks and especially in the past few days. There were some problems with the servers to which we were moved by our former host. Since they seemed to be unable to fix it, I found a new hosting arrangement and moved the site. The new host seems great.

GPT's- What They Are and How You Can Earn Money
Internet: 02/23/08 - 11:05:36 by sofkins
People everywhere are looking for ways to make money at home. Some may want a constant work at home job so that they never have to "go to the office" again, or others just want to supplement their current income. There are a variety of ways that you can make extra cash at home just using the Internet. One easy way to add dollars to your current budget at home is by joining GPT (Get Paid To) websites.

It's a very easy process how a GPT website works. Most GPT websites need to create a company database of those that would pay them to bring in new customers to their websites. The kind of companies that may pay GPT websites would be ones like cosmetics or any other type of shopping venue, credit card companies, telephone services, magazines, survey websites, and any other type of service websites. Companies are always looking for new customers to bring in extra money and to keep their supplies in demand. What better way to do this, than to pay another company to bring in their customers for them?

Once a GPT website has companies available, they then form their website and pay people like YOU to try their products and services or to do surveys. Most companies may only make you pay shipping and handling to try their products. Most shipping and handling fees are very low in these kinds of cases-most of them are never above four or five dollars at the most. An easy way to pay for such small amounts is to have a disposable credit card that you would just use online. While you might pay around $2 for shipping, you might make an extra $5-$20 profit just for trying these products and services. It's easy money for just doing a simple task.

If you have joined a GPT website and have decided that you would not like to use credit cards online, there are other ways to earn cash as well. You can take company surveys, play games online, shopping at websites, or refer friends. There's a world of possibilities when it comes to a GPT website. The cash that you will earn depends on how much effort and time that you put into it.

When you have decided that joining a GPT website is for you and you would like to try to earn extra money, there are some steps that you need to follow in order to protect yourself, and of course, keep all of your venues organized that you have taken surveys for or joined up for on trial offers.

Some of these steps that you need to take are as follows:

*Get a separate free email account from the one you already have. You will probably get a lot of advertisements from these companies. When you are finished with the trial offers, you can delete these emails. Email accounts to try are ones like gmail, yahoo, hotmail, etc.

*Whatever you do--NEVER give out your personal home phone number. Go online where you can sign up with a free local phone number that has voice mail where you could check your messages online. This way you won't receive unwanted calls into your home, and you can safely use voicemail without the intrusion.

* To pay for shipping costs, get a debit or credit card. Virtual credit cards work well too. If you have a paypal account, you can easily sign up for your very own free virtual credit card. Or if you would rather not use your own credit card, disposable prepaid cards are available for purchase as well.

*Stay organized by keeping track of your offers. Write down the offer name, the date you signed up, your profit after shipping, and the date that you can decide if you want to cancel the item or keep it.

*Download C Cleaner. It is a freeware system and optimization tool. This way you can get rid of unused files on your computer system, and free it up for more memory so that your computer runs fast and more smoothly. It also will erase your history and activities that you have done on the Internet.

Once you have simplified these tasks and put them to use, it's time to research and pick, which GPT websites you would like to join. If you want an easy place to start with, try http://mealticketonus.com/getpaid . This is a simple and easy website to join, and it's also free so you have nothing to lose. You join this website, and decide which companies that you would like to complete your trial offers or free offers with, and there's also surveys to take, and websites to visit, etc.

For every offer you complete you earn money. It's also very easy to cash out at Meal Ticket On Us as well. Once a member reaches $5, they get to cash out by choosing a paypal payment . This website is updated very often, and is sure to keep you busy.

How to spot an internet marketing expert
SE Optimization: 02/20/08 - 02:51:56 by pauljun
I have guru disgust syndrome. More often than not, there are people who claim to be internet marketing experts, but have no real credibility behind it. They play to the emotions of unsuspecting people who part with their money but never get what they expect.

This is the world of the internet marketing experts we know today. It is a world filled with skepticism, and an instant gratification world that does not allow real people to show themselves because of the fear that "normal results" are not good enough.

So, you want to be an internet marketing expert? Be my guest! I don't suppose you are going to want to have to hold the responsibility of being accused of being "one of the scammers" in the world.

Of course, there are pre-requisites. If you want to know good internet marketing experts, they are usually not easy to find. They have results that are so key, they will rather hide it than to give it to you. Some experts are already right there in front of you, but they don't consider themselves experts. These are the ones you should be learning from. They have some knowledge, but that knowledge could mean a difference of 4 or 5 figures to you!

What I'm saying is this: if you are actively seeking out mentors, anyone, even a newbie, could be a mentor to you. You can develop your internet marketing skills through observing more people. In the short run, you will need to know who are good at what they do. This is why I recommend that you go to the place where you get third party input about who is an internet marketing expert.

All you need to do is to simply ask about your "guru" in question on the forums I've provided, and there will be people who will breathe new life into your evaluation. Of course, this also means there are some experts on the forums who can already answer your questions.

How & Why We Get Paid For Online Surveys?
Freeware: 10/29/07 - 01:14:40 by sofkins
"Make $25 for just 5 minutes of work Completing Simple Surveys in your spare-time!" These are the words we come across while searching for surveys in search engines. Yes, indeed paid surveys online is a great work from home opportunity to make some extra money in your spare time. You can make a good amount of money; there are quite a few companies on the net that pay you to answer surveys.
They make their money by selling market research information to large corporations. There are over 7 million companies that actively survey consumers to find the best way to promote their products to get a high standard of business. Most of the reputed paid survey sites are online divisions of market research companies. Market Research companies are concerned in knowing your opinion on various matters on behalf of their clients. Your opinion allows them to get in touch with consumers and their views, personal interests, habits, and desires of potential or future customers. This useful data from the surveys helps them optimize their products to the market demand and target their customers more effectively. These companies are willing to pay you for your time you spend for them! In fact all of them free to join. But its time consuming to gather the data of the companies which give the paid surveys. So some membership sites act as a middle-man, charge a token of amount to give you a list of reputable companies. I don't think they are charging a large amount. Its only as a fee to register and sign-up. Getting paid online surveys is guaranteed by these survey companies with joining fee from their members. Be cautious in knowing their legitimacy. Some of the legitimate survey sites are well known among seasoned survey takers. New survey companies are launched every week, trying to capture the growing demand for survey takers. So a close monitoring of the legitimacy of the paid survey sites is essential, otherwise you could loose your hard earned money and valuable time. The highest paid survey jobs are a combination of financial payments, prizes and incentive rewards. Some paid surveys online offer unique rewards like "Get paid to try new products, Get paid to preview movie trailers, Get paid to travel, Get paid to drive your car, Get Paid To Shop and Eat!" Some offer cash discounts on merchandise. You don't need anything to do all this. There is nothing to download. You do not need any special computer or operating system. You simply log in and find surveys. This can be done from any computer, at any time with internet connected PC or a laptop. Most paid survey opportunities require that you are at least 18 years of age, but other than that there are no specific requirements. Sign-up with a maximum number of survey companies. If you don't sign up with all the available survey makers, you will miss surveys you could have taken and lose income that you otherwise could have made. There is no fixed number of survey makers. Plan to sign up for 150 to 300 survey makers and get paid surveys. Do create a separate email id for the paid surveys online and check your inbox at least once a day. After you complete the surveys, some companies will allow you to be paid by Paypal online. You can even get company check by postal mail. Most paychecks are sent twice monthly, some will pay once a month. It's your choice that you can specify your payment mode. The amount of surveys taken, and income earned will depend on how much time and effort you put into the surveys. Income is solely dependent on an individual's effort and attention to survey offers. So if you are serious to make money online and want to get paid for your opinion, you should make a serious effort initially. Later on you could spare a few hours and enjoy the benefits of paid surveys. As time is money, even the search engine like Yahoo! is sending YPN surveys to the survey takers for general information and opinion. They are paying a good amount of money for the time spent on the survey. So its your turn to cash the benefits that are offered by the Fortune 500 corporations and other MNC's in the form of paid surveys online. Make the companies get paid for your opinions.

Getting Free Stuff - How Freebies Work
Freeware: 10/25/07 - 07:58:38 by sofkins
If there is one thing that we enjoy it is getting something for free. I've seen people get excited about getting useless junk without having to pay for it. Yes in the land of the free we surely love getting stuff for free. Game shows are built around these premises. Win cars, home or cash without having to pay for it. We aspire to be apart of such action. If we can't we spend time in front of the television watching other people getting free stuff.

There are several factors though that has made free things available to the masses. First is the fact that free is so powerful. When it comes to marketing the most important word is free. It drives people to its source. Because of this companies look to capitalize on the opportunity. If they give a product of their own away for free they attract attention.

Other companies use free stuff to their advantage. Take for instance the vacation industry. You can take free vacations, get free park attraction tickets or even get paid to vacation. The reason is so that they can give you their 2-4 hour sales pitch. Be assured it will come. They use this tactic every day. Why? It works for them.

So when it comes to free stuff the fact of the matter is everyone comes out a winner. As the consumer we end up with something that we didn't have to pay for. Companies benefit because by craftily giving something away for free they end up benefiting their bottom line.

Balancing Paid and Organic Search
SE Optimization: 07/19/07 - 09:35:59 by bhartzer

Does your company's website really need to be listed in both the organic or "natural" search results as well as the paid "sponsored" results? The answer is a most definite "yes". After talking to a lot of other search engine marketing experts, we all tend to agree that a combined approach--one that relies on both organic search engine rankings and paid listings works best.

Higher click-thru ratios
According to recent research, (I will quote and talk about the research in the presentation), websites that are listed at the top of the organic search results and the paid listings will triple their click-thru ratio. Three times more people will visit your website if it is listed in both places because there is a "second opinion effect". Searchers see both listings and are encouraged by the fact that a website is listed in both the organic listings and the paid listings.

Greater penetration of search results
By optimizing your website's content to rank well in the organic search results, your website can be found for many keyword phrases and combinations of keywords. Good organic search engine rankings typically take months to achieve, and are fairly easy to maintain on an ongoing basis. Pay per click (PPC) can be implemented quickly--it can also be turned on and off as needed, depending on your company's budget and current promotions.

More keyword research
Keyword research tells you how many people per day search for what keyword terms. There are many tools available that allow you to perform keyword research even before you achieve organic search engine rankings or start a PPC campaign. Once organic search engine rankings are achieved, keyword research using existing website statistic data allows you to enhance your listing of keywords--you can combine your organic keyword list with your PPC keyword list to focus on the keyword phrases that bring you the best ROI. If you start a PPC program before your organic rankings are achieved, then you can use the PPC data to enhance your organic ranking efforts--focus on keywords that are giving you a better conversion rate and more qualified traffic to your site.

Build credibility
Organic search engine rankings provide very high levels of credibility and broad coverage on potentially every search engine worldwide. When a website is listed well in the organic search results, the website usually is found for not only their chosen keywords but many combinations of keyword phrases related to those chosen keywords. It's those other combinations of related keywords that bring a website a lot of more visibility in the search results, frequently causing a website appear to be found "for everything" related to a certain industry. The results can be staggering--a properly optimized website can appear in the search results more often and for more related keywords than a company who has not done any organic search optimization.

Appearing the paid results also helps to build credibility--just because a searcher doesn't click on a paid ad and visits the website doesn't mean they haven't seen the company's sponsored listing. Paid listings also can provide some visibility and credibility for certain keywords that aren't usually obtainable through organic search engine optimization.

Yesterday the site here was upgraded to the latest version of WebAPP . There have been a lot of security measures applied to versions since our last upgrade here. I noticed today that some of those have caused conflicts with the system we were using here, highly modified as it was from the original WebAPP system used as a base for this portal system engine. There was a problem with posting and pages redirecting after making postings to various features. There are now in place some workarounds or fixes for all issues that have surfaced. Any more found issues will be promptly addressed.

Thanks for your patience with this upgrade, and our apologizies for any problems you have encountered with the new security features conflicting with the system here.

THE AFRICAN GREY PARROT (PSITTACUS ERITHACUS)
Culture: 10/15/06 - 22:20:07 by Tanah
The African Grey Parrot is restricted to the equatorial forest belt from guinea-Bissau to Kakamega forest in western Kenya. In Uganda, It is found in appropriate habitat across the south of the country, north to Kaniyo Pabidi in Murchison falls protected areas, across the Mabira Forest and Ssese Islands.

This beautiful Parrot has two described races or forms which are physically different in appearance, the paler nominate, which is scientifically known as Psittacus erithacus in central east Africa and the darker P.E. timneh in the west with a cline of escalating size from West  to East. The sexes are similar, the male becoming darker with age and the young bird is told from an adult by a grey, not yellow iris.

It is a big Parrot, slightly covered in size by the grey headed parrot piocephalus suahelicus (seen only in Uganda at Mgahinga and Bwindi, ruhiza national parks) and usually seen flying overhead in flocks of 2-20, uttering a series of screams, screeches, pops, whistles and croaks. Its demand as a very popular household pet is proving to be the cause of its increasing rarity in the wild, through illegal collecting as well as habitat destruction.

There are only 21 species of parrot in Africa compared to 52 in Australia and 70 in south America.

Traditionally, this species would have been far more wide spread within the forest biome, but the fragmentation of forest cover over its range has reduced it to isolated population in pockets of forest.

In Kampala, we see them usually in the morning and evening coming to and from perch. They are particularly fond of oil palm fruits, of which there are many mature trees in Kampala, planted years ago as ornamental specimens.

Birds flock together at night at traditional communal roost sites(in Gabon traditional roosts of 5-10,000 birds have  been recorded!) and depart in  the morning to fruiting trees sometimes flying great distances to feed.

Being confined to the equator, it does not have seasonal migration pattern but flies far and wide in response to fruiting trees in different seasons.  During the rains it will capitalize on fruiting forest trees not traveling very far, but during the dry season it will often move away from the forest into agricultural areas to feed on maize, causing considerable damage to subsistence crops. It can be seen flying over Lake Victoria between the Sesse Islands and Forest patches in and around Masaka, distances of up to 50km.

African greys nest in large trees, in old growth forests that have plenty of dead wood to support naturally occurring cavities. They will use woodpecker holes and lay 2-4 white eggs.

Parrots are the only birds that have a movable maxilla, the upper bill attached hinge like to the skull. They can exert tremendous power with the bill, which is used to open the more stubborn of nuts and fruit. They have the most remarkable feet, using them not just as other birds do, but as hands to hold food items like a stick of sugar cane in the same way that we way that man would. Instead of normal bird feet, three forward one back, they have two toes pointing forward and two back (Zygodactyls). These feet combined with the bill, which it uses to hold onto branches, enable the bird to climb very well along flimsy branches to reach fruit at the tips, giving it an advantage over other birds its size, which are physically unable to climb in the same way.

Given their impressive natural vocabulary and range of calls, they are very well disposed to pick up new sounds in and around their environment. This is a particular attraction for the bird as a pet, which will imitate everything from cell phone to the toilet being flushed!!

Parrots generally live to a great age the famous sulfur-crested Cockatoo at London zoo lived to 126 years old!!

Without the pressures of survival in the wild, African Greys will live up to 60 years in captivity, and around 40-50 in the wild.

If their breeding habitat is removed, they will be seen mistakenly thriving for years, but not breeding. Eventually the population becomes too old to breed and suddenly over a short period of time dies off.

The main predator, other than man , to prey upon African Grey Parrot is the  Black sparrow hawk, the largest of the Accipiter family, sometimes seen around Kampala and Entebbe.. The predator is by nature secretive , ambushing its prey from thick cover. Others include Ayres's Hawk Eagle and African Harrier Hawk ( or Gymnogene) the latter using its specialized long, double -jointed legs to reach into the parrot's nest-hole to reach the chicks.

With old growth forest severely depleted outside of major reserves, breeding habitat can be simulated in suburban areas. Firewood collection has put great pressure on hole nesting species and those which feed on invertebrates, through the collection of dead wood, which in a forest is as important as live wood.

An exciting activity to experiment with is to install parrot nesting boxes. Anyone in Kampala with a garden having medium to large trees, that attract feeding greys, can try putting up different designs to see if they become occupied.

A basic box shape 250 by 250 cm wide by 600cm long with an entrance hole 12 cm diameter may attract parrots to it. It can also attract bees, so caution is advised as to where it is actually placed. I had a pair of brown parrots nest in a box in Muyenga a Kampala suburb as well as a pair of Burchell's starling at Kawempe. Black and white casqued Hornbills may also greatly appreciate a tea-chest or beer keg sized nest- box, which they readily take to.

There may be as many as 2000 pet African Greys in Kampala ´, most having been caught in the wild. Bird breeders who rear African Greys are supposed to fit a closed ring to the leg of the Chick before it grows too big. Therefore an adult with closed ring will probably be a captive bred bird.

UGANDA PRIMATES
Culture: 10/15/06 - 22:18:48 by Tanah
East Africa as a whole is one of the most well-recognized safari destination for tourists looking to see a variety of wildlife that is rare and exotic. What most tourists don't realize however is what sets Uganda apart from other destinations such as Tanzania and Kenya.

Thanks to its climate, Uganda has a colossal amount of rich and dense forest making it a perfect home to species that are absent from other parts of East Africa. Yet unlike similar forests in other parts of Africa, Uganda's forests are easily accessible for viewing forest wildlife, especially primates!

Primates evolved Africa approximately 60 million years ago. The first primates were shrew-like animals that resemble the pottos and bush babies of Uganda Today. These more primitive primates are known as prosimians and were the first primates to exist in Africa. Monkeys did not evolve until 10 million years later at around 50 million years while apes were not found in Africa until 20 million years ago. One of the first known apes, proconsul, was discovered on Rusinga Island in Lake Victoria. Apes are easy to distinguish from monkeys by their Lack of a trail.

Primate-inhabited forests are under threat in Uganda, as they appear to be in other parts of the world because of the increasing number of people all struggling to find placing to live. The number of species living in tropical forest is much higher than elsewhere, and a proportionately large number of species are finding it harder to survive. Monkeys and ape of the forests are among the worst affected, with nearly one in four monkey species worldwide being very close to extinction. Forests have delicate ecosystems and many and many primate species have evolved a specialized lifestyle, causing them to react poorly to sudden changes in their environments such as loss of habitat and human encroachment.

Uganda is home to over 300 mammals, primates being exceptionally well represented among them. With around 20 species of primates, both day-dwelling (diurnal) and night-dwelling (nocturnal), the variety and bounty of Uganda's primate population is unparalleled. The best Uganda primates are the great apes. Most rare is the mountain gorilla, Gorilla Beringei, which inhabits Bwindi Impenetrable National park and Mgahinga National Park in Southwestern Uganda. Mountain gorillas, one of three gorilla subspecies, are some of the most endangered animals today -with an estimated total population of 750, mountain gorillas are living on the brink of extinction.

Thousand of visitors travel to Bwindi ever year to see the majestic mountain gorilla, helping the communities of Bwindi every year to see the largest of all the primate species, with adult sometimes weighing over 200 kilos.

Only slightly smaller is the chimpanzee, Pan Troglodytes, which inhabit most of the western forest of Uganda and can be seen at Kibaale National Park, Kaniyo Pabidi forest site near Murchison falls National Park, as well as Ngamba Island Chimpanzee sanctuary in Lake Victoria. Chimpanzees are extensively studied in the wild and in captivity and have been found to be closer to humans than any other creature as they share over 98% of our DNA. Unlike Gorilla, who eat mostly leaves; chimpanzees eat primarily fruit but have been witnessed hunting and killing the colobus monkey for food.

What is less well-known is that Uganda is also full of monkeys. There are five different types, or "genera", which include the colobus, the guenons, the baboons, the Patas and the Mangbeys. Some of these monkeys are as widespread and easily seen as a domestic animal in others parts of the world. The vervet monkey, Cercopithecus aethiops, a light gray guenon, is thought to be to be the most numerous monkey species in the world and can be found every where in Uganda except the forest. Highly intelligent vervets have specialized calling systems distinguishing them between aerial and Land predators.

Patas monkeys, or Erthrocebus patas, look quite similar to vervets and also are terrestrial primates. The patas has a redish-brown coat, unlike the vervet grey coat, and is restricted to the month of Uganda, in kidepo and Murchison falls National parks. Baboons, or Papio anubis, are heavy and terrestrial primates, and are easily recognized because of their size and their long, canine snout. Like the vervet, baboons are highly adaptable and have become the most widespread primate in Africa. They too live in large, social groups and you will often see them feeding and grooming on the road side. The Olive baboon, the only type found in Uganda, can be found in all of the National parks except for the three mountainous Parks.

Probably the most viewable primate within the forest strata is the black and white colobus, colobus guereza. These beautiful primates live in most of the Ugandan forest, as well as river woodland. They dwell entirely in the trees, and are L,heost's monkey is rarely visible because it usually dwells in dense secondary forest and undergrowth. It has a black face and backward-facing white whiskers and usually carries its tail upright. If one is lucky, they can catch a L,hoest's monkey in kibale forest, Bwindi or Maramagambo forest with in  Queen Elizabeth national park.

A large number of primates that live in Uganda's forest are never seen by tourists because they sleep during the day and are only active at night. These include the bush baby (galago) of which there five different species in Uganda- and the potto (Perodicticus Potto). Both species are norcturnal, although the shrill cry of the bushaby is distinctive sound easily distinguished by their black bodies and long white tufted tails and shaggy white sides. They live in small groups and eat only leaves. Their diet is so specialized; their stomachs have different compartments to help them digest their leaves that they eat.

The black and white colobus aren't the only colobus in the forest, either. The red colobus, piliocolobus badius, which live in large groups and are highly sociable, are only found in areas surrounding Kibale National Park. They have tufted red crowns and are often hunted by chimpanzees as food.

The blue monkey (Ceropithecus mitis) is the most widely dispersed forest guenon in East Africa. It is common in most Ugandan forest guenon in East Africa. It is common in most Ugandan forests except for Murchison falls and L. Mburo National and often lives in Union with other forest monkeys. Blue monkeys are not, in fact, blue but dark grey with white throat and chest, as well as tufted grey hair on their foreheads. In the forest, the males make a distinctive "pyow" sound as a territorial marker that can be heard from a far distance.

The red-tailed monkey, Cercopithecus ascinius, is also a forest guenon but its red. The red-tailed monkey is also brownish with white whiskers and has a heart shaped white patch on its nose. Red tailed monkeys are often found in Kibale forest, Semliki, Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi National Park, as well as Budongo Forest and Mpanga Forest.

Two other forest guenons are more infrequently seen- Debrazza's monkey and (Cercopithecus Neglectus)L,Hooest's monkey(Cercopithecus lheost). De Brazza's monkey is thickset and shorter than the other guenons, with a white band across its brows and white moustache and beard. De brazza's is primarily a West. African Species, but can be found near Mt. Elgon and Semliki National Parks.

L'Hoest's monkey is rarely visible because it usually dwells in dense secondary forest and undergrowth. It has a black face and backward-facing white whiskers and usually carries its tail upright. If one is lucky, they can catch a L'Hoest's monkey in kibaale Forest, Bwindi or Mamagambo Forest within Queen Elizabeth National park.

A large number of primate that live in Uganda's forests are never seen by tourists because they sleep during the day and  are only active at night. These include the bushbaby(Galago)- of which there are five different species in Uganda - and the Potto (Perodicticus Potto). Both species are nocturnal, although the shrill cry of the Bush baby is distinctive sound of the African night. Both Primates are more closely related to the more primitive  prosimians, like the lemurs of Madagascar. At Kibaale forest, there are guided night walks on which one can see these nocturnal primates.

As one can clearly see, Uganda is rich with primates. Each primate species has its own quirks, behaviors and each species can provide a primatologist with a lifetime's worth of study and research material. The scientists that contribute to the international primatological society each understand how vital their role is- better understanding of each primate species will enable them to spread awareness and help ensure that primate's survival. The responsibility, however, doesn't lie with the Scientist alone.

Wildlife parks and forest reserves have been created to enable their animal inhabitants to survive and thrive while also serving to educate the public - tourist and local communities alike -about the wonder each species has to offer.

These sites are set up initially to enable tourists to share in the experience, but these sites and rangers employed are all that stands between some of these primates and extinction. And each of them relies on visitors to maintain it's services to the wildlife  communities.
